406 Beacon Decoder

Read the 15-hex ID from your own ELT self-test.

What it does

  • Complete the annual Transport Canada "Operational Test" on the ramp in about a minute.
  • A handheld radio is paired with the free phone app to decode your ELT's Hex ID.

In the kit

  • Handheld radio, programmed before it ships.
  • The phone app, free, for iPhone and Android. A card in the box has the link.

What it is not

  • It does not measure power or frequency.
  • Can not be used to carry out the 2 year "Performance Test" outlined by CAR Standard 571.

How a check goes

Handheld Radio monitors 406 MHz while the ELT is activated in Test mode. Hold your phone near the handheld's speaker and the app records/decodes the transmission.

Only activate an ELT in test mode, according to the manufacturer, and follow the rules of your regulatory authority.

The kit

$229 CAD. The radio leaves here already set. The app is free. Ships as a pair.
